Understanding the Lithosphere

Thomas Liang Preliminary Geography 28 April 08

Forces that shapes the earth’s surface

Two sets of forces shapes the earth’s surface, they are the force of gradation and tectonic forces.

Gradation forces are the result from gravity and radiant energy from the sun, which wears down and smooth the earth’s surface.

Tectonic forces are the result of the earth’s internal energy, pushing up and creating new landforms.

The Lithosphere

The lithosphere is the outer shell of the earth, consisting of all rock, soil and other geological formations.

The lithosphere is the solid potion of the earth as oppose to the liquid or the gaseous potion called hydrosphere and atmosphere.

Scientists are able to infer, using seismic waves that transverse through the earth in various speed. From the study of these seisms-graphs, depth, density physical state and the type of rocks in each layer of below the surface can be inferred.
